Challenge

As the Boulder Chamber Orchestra approached its 10th anniversary season, the ensemble faced a visual identity that no longer reflected its artistic caliber. The printed concert program—cluttered, inconsistent, and utilitarian—undermined the orchestra’s refinement and the sophistication of its performances. The challenge was to translate their musical excellence into a visual experience worthy of their artistry.

Insights

The orchestra’s community was passionate and loyal, yet the brand materials lacked the emotional resonance and polish needed to inspire deeper connection and support. The opportunity lay in reimagining the audience experience—from the first glance at the program to the final encore—as an extension of the orchestra’s sound: elegant, balanced, and human.

Solution

Leading the rebrand, I conducted a full visual audit and designed a new concert program that embodied the orchestra’s artistic vision. We transitioned from a dense tri-fold to a beautifully crafted matte booklet, elevating every detail—layout, typography, photography, and texture. Professional portraits replaced miniature headshots, with each musician photographed and composed like a soloist, creating visual harmony across the ensemble. Clean white space, lyrical cropping of instruments, and refined typography gave the design a timeless, gallery-like quality.

Results

The new program design received enthusiastic feedback from patrons, who appreciated its elegance and professionalism. This quality shift led to increased audience engagement, with many expressing a deeper connection to the musicians and the orchestra’s mission. Ultimately, the refreshed brand positioned the Boulder Chamber Orchestra as a leader in the local arts community, fostering new partnerships and boosting ticket sales.
